The Luxury and Delicacy of Silk
Silk represents the pinnacle of luxury in formal evening wear. Its lustrous appearance, beautiful drape, and soft feel against skin make it a favourite for bespoke evening dresses and formal cocktail dresses. However, this natural fibre's delicate nature requires informed, careful maintenance.
At Ohifumere, some of our custom formal wear pieces feature silk, either as primary fabric or in linings, panels, or details. Understanding silk care ensures your investment remains pristine for years.
Understanding Silk Fabric
Why Silk is Special:
Silk is a natural protein fibre produced by silkworms. Its unique structure gives silk distinctive characteristics:
Exceptional strength despite delicate feel
Natural temperature regulation
Beautiful lustrous sheen
Excellent dye absorption creating rich colours
Drapes beautifully for formal wear
Types of Silk in Formal Wear:
Silk Charmeuse: Satin weave with lustrous front, matte back, common in evening gowns
Silk Dupioni: Textured surface with slub effect, elegant for structured dresses
Silk Crepe: Matte finish with beautiful drape, sophisticated for modern silhouettes
Silk Chiffon: Sheer, flowing, often used in overlays and sleeves
Silk Satin: High sheen finish, dramatic for formal occasions
Reading Silk Care Labels
"Dry Clean Only": Strictly adhere to this instruction
"Dry Clean": Professional cleaning recommended but hand-washing may be possible
Check for: Fabric composition, silk blends may have different care requirements
Hand-Washing Silk (When Appropriate)
Before You Begin:
Test for Colour Fastness:
Dampen cotton swab with mild detergent and water
Dab on interior seam
Check if dye transfers to swab
If colour bleeds, dry clean only
The Hand-Washing Process:
Step 1: Prepare Your Basin
Fill clean sink with cool or lukewarm water (never hot)
Add small amount of silk-specific or delicate detergent
Swish water to dissolve detergent completely
Step 2: Wash Gently
Submerge garment completely
Gently agitate for 3-5 minutes maximum
Never rub, scrub, or wring silk
Focus on underarm and neckline areas if needed
Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly
Drain soapy water
Rinse under cool running water until water runs clear
Or rinse in several changes of cool water
Ensure all detergent is removed (residue attracts dirt)
Step 4: Remove Excess Water
Never wring or twist silk, this damages fibres permanently
Gently squeeze water out with hands
Roll garment in clean, dry towel
Press towel to absorb moisture
Repeat with second dry towel if needed
Drying Silk Properly
Air Drying is Essential:
Lay flat on clean, dry towel
Smooth garment into shape
Keep away from direct sunlight (causes fading)
Avoid heat sources (radiators, heating vents)
Allow to dry naturally—silk dries relatively quickly
Turn over periodically for even drying
Never:
Tumble dry silk (causes shrinkage and damage)
Hang wet silk (weight of water distorts shape)
Dry in direct sunlight
Ironing and Pressing Silk
When to Iron
Smoothing silk while slightly damp often eliminates the need for ironing. If ironing is necessary:
The Silk Ironing Process:
Ensure iron is completely clean (no residue)
Set to lowest heat setting or silk-specific setting
Iron on reverse side when possible
Place pressing cloth between iron and fabric
Iron while garment is still slightly damp
Use quick, light strokes, never leave iron stationary
Allow to cool completely before wearing or storing
Alternative: Professional Steaming
Professional steamers provide gentler wrinkle removal than home irons.
Stain Treatment for Silk
The Cardinal Rule: Act Immediately
For Fresh Spills:
Blot (never rub) immediately with clean white cloth
Work from outside of stain toward center
Continue blotting until no more liquid transfers
Allow to air dry
What NOT to Do:
Never use spot removers on silk
Never rub stain vigorously
Never apply water to one small area (creates water rings)
Professional Help for:
Oil-based stains
Wine or dark beverage spills
Makeup or cosmetic stains
Perspiration stains
Any stains in center of visible areas
Storing Silk Formal Wear
Short-Term Storage:
Hang on padded silk or satin hangers (wooden hangers can snag)
Use breathable cotton garment bag
Ensure garment is completely clean
Store in cool, dark, dry place
Long-Term Storage:
Professional cleaning before storage
Padded hangers or careful folding with acid-free tissue
Breathable cotton storage bags or boxes
Natural moth deterrents (cedar, lavender)
Check every 2-3 months
Refold in different positions if folded
Never:
Store silk in plastic bags (traps moisture, causes mildew)
Store in damp environments
Store dirty or stained silk
Use wire hangers
Special Considerations for Embellished Silk
Bespoke dresses often feature beading, embroidery, or other embellishments on silk:
Always professional dry clean embellished silk
Never iron directly over embellishments
Store with tissue protecting embellished areas
Handle carefully to prevent snagging
Silk and Perspiration
Silk is vulnerable to perspiration damage:
Wear dress shields or undergarments
Allow silk to air thoroughly after wearing
Clean promptly after wearing (perspiration weakens silk fibres)
Consider professional cleaning if heavily worn
Silk in Different Climates
Humid Environments:
Ensure silk is completely dry before storing
Use dehumidifiers in storage areas
Check more frequently for mildew
Dry Environments:
Silk may become brittle, professional cleaning helps restore moisture
Avoid over-drying between wears
Common Silk Care Mistakes to Avoid
Using harsh detergents or bleach
Washing in hot water
Wringing or twisting wet silk
Hanging wet silk garments
Over-dry cleaning
Storing in plastic
Applying perfume directly to silk
Using regular iron settings
Ignoring care labels
Delaying stain treatment
When to Seek Professional Help
Always dry clean:
"Dry Clean Only" labelled garments
Structured silk garments with interfacing

Valuable or sentimental pieces
Culturally-inspired formal wear with traditional silk elements
